Phylogeny: The Rigid Gorgonian, Leptogorgia rigida (Verrill, 1864), is an octocoral member of the Gorgoniidae Family of Gorgonians. The Leptagorgia genus is one of thirteen genera in this family, and there are ninety-four recognized species in this genus. The species name rigida comes from the Latin adjective meaning ”stiff”, “unbending”, or “rigid”. They are also known as the Rigid Sea Whip and the Rigid Sea Fan and in Mexico as Gorgonia Rigida.
Morphology: The Rigid Gorgonian is a colonial organism that is composed of thousands of individual polyps. As the name suggests, Rigid Gorgonians have less flexible branches than other gorgonians. The branches contain sclerites, which are internal calcium carbonate structures that provide rigidity. The central core of the branches is composed of a horn-like substance called gorgonin. Gorgonin is comprised of bromine and iodine, with a protein that is exclusive to gorgonians. The sclerites are located in the solid core and the polyps are embedded in a gelatinous material (the coenenchyme) which surrounds the core. The individual polyps are translucent or whitish. The polyps are characterized by flat polyp-mounds rather than prominent raised bumps. When the polyps retract a smooth colorful body is exposed. Rigid Gorgonians may be solid colored or mixed, with shades of bluish purple, orange and red. Rigid Gorgonian colonies may be fan-like or bushy, often having an irregular or shrubby look. Rigid Gorgonians reach a maximum of around 55 cm (21.7 inches) in height.
Habitat and Distribution: Rigid Gorgonians are found attached to hard surfaces such as coral, pilings, rocks, and wreckage, in current-swept areas. They live at depths between 2 m (6 feet) and 20 m (66 feet). Rough Gorgonians are a subtropical to tropical Eastern Pacific species that are found in all Mexican waters of the Pacific Ocean with the exception that they are absent from the west coast of the Baja Peninsula and from the northern Sea of Cortez.
Diet: The Rigid Gorgonian is a sessile suspension feeder that captures drifting food in the water column by individual polyps with small tentacles. Their diet consists of water-borne prey like eggs, larvae and plankton. They are an azooxanthellate coral.
Predation: Predation of the Ridig Gorgonian has been poorly documented. Similar species in the Leptogorgia Genus are preyed upon by butterflyfishes, damselfishes, gastropods, nudibranchs and sea stars.
Reproduction: Rigid Gorgonians are gonochoric (male or female for life). Reproduction may be asexual, through fragmentation, or sexual. Sexual reproduction is accomplished through broadcast spawning, with external fertilization. The gametes are shed into the coelenteron and spawned through the mouth. The zygote develops into a planktonic planula larva. Metamorphosis begins with early morphogenesis of tentacles, septa and pharynx before larval settlement on the aboral end.
Ecosystem Interactions: Rigid Gorgonians are a poorly studied and documented species. Their commensal, mutualistic and parasitic relationships have not been formally documented. They are known to share space with algae, other octocorals and spongers. During daylight hours they are often wrapped in brittle sea stars seeking protection. At night the brittle stars emerge for feeding consuming detritus and other foods allowing the gorgonian to extend their polyps for feeding.

Human Interactions: Rigid Gorgonians have a very limited impact on human activities. From a conservation perspective the Rigid Gorgonian has not not been formally evaluated but they are common with a wide distribution and should be considered to be of Least Concern.
