Phylogeny: The Red Copse Horny Sponge, Endectyon (Endectyon) hyle (de Laubenfels, 1930), is a member of the Raspailiidae Family and the Raspailiinae Subfamily of Demosponges. The Raspailiinae Subfamily contains eleven genera. The Endectyon Genus contains two subgenera, Endectyon (Endectyon) and Endectyon (Hemectyon). The Endectyon (Endectyon) Genus consists of thirteen species. The genus name Endectyon comes from the Greek words meaning “inner network” or “internal net”, and refers to these sponges’ internal skeletal network of spicules (needle-like components). The species name hyle also comes from the Greek and in modern zoological taxonomy means “bushy”, “woody”, or “shrub-like”. This refers to the sponge’s branched or tufted appearance.
Morphology: The Red Copse Horny Sponge is an erect, branched, sponge. The frond-like branches end in rounded lobes. The fronds, which extend outward and upward from the base or stalk, are often described as “bulky”. The fronds are sculpted with irregular folds or corrugations. While most specimens are described as short, rugose, and bushy, there is some variation in this species. Some specimens are described as short, rounded, and lumpy, while others are ramose (having two cylindrical branches). These sponges have a hard consistency and are difficult to break. The surface has a fine bristly texture (hispidity), because the spicules pierce the sponge’s surface. Red Copse Horny Sponges may be reddish-brown, reddish-orange, bright orange, or yellow in color. The bristly surface texture often holds sediment on the sponge’s surface. Red Copse Horny Sponges reach 3.0 cm (1.2 inches) in width at the base, and 6.0 cm (2.4 inches) in height.
Habitat and Distribution: Copse Horny Sponges are found growing on soft substrates, rocks, and other hard substrates at depths between 3 m (10 feet) and 396 m (1,300 feet), with most being found at depths exceeding 15 m (50 feet) The Red Copse Horny Sponge is a temperate to tropical Eastern Pacific species. Their geographic range has been poorly documented and they are known to have a very discontinuous range. Their range in Mexican waters of the Pacific is poorly documented.
Diet: The Copse Horny Sponge is a filter feeder that pump water through their body wall and filter out plankton and suspended organic matter. As water passes through its internal canal system, the choanocytes and other specialized cells trap tiny particles. Food is digested inside individual cells rather than in a stomach or gut.
Predators: There is limited documentation regarding predation of Copse Horny Sponge. Similar species in the Raspailiidae Family rely on their sharp oxeas and styles, as well as chemical deterrents, to discourage most predators. Spongivorous fishes, Hawksbill Sea Turtles, nudibranchs and sea stars are known predators.
Reproduction: The Red Copse Horny Sponges are simultaneous hermaphrodites (having both male and female reproductive organs). Reproduction is sexual, through broadcast spawning. The eggs are then fertilized internally. The embryos develop in brood chambers until they reach a certain size, then disperse as planktonic parenchymella larvae. These larvae are free swimming, until they settle down on hard substrate where they grow into young sponges. They can also reproduce asexually through fragmentation and regeneration.
Ecosystem Interactions: Red Copse Horny Sponges are an essential component of benthic ecosystems across specific rocky and coral reef habitats as they filter water in localized areas and move organic matter to higher tropic levels. They also provide habitat to multiple species including amphipods, brittle stars, crustaceans, nematodes, and polychaeta worms. In the Tropical Eastern Pacific collector crabs are often seen with strips or fragments of the sponge attached to their carapace. The sponge’s bristly texture attaches well to the velcro-like texture of the carapace. The sponges usually continue to grow. In this mutualistic relationship, the crab gains camouflage and the sponge has a mobile base to move to new food sources. Generally, the crab clips off a portion of the sponge colony in order to attach it to the carapace, though in some cases they find loose, free-floating fragments. Otherwise, their commensal, mutualistic and parasitic relationships have not been formally documented.
Human Interactions: Red Copse Horny Sponge have no direct impact on human activities. From a conservation perspective they have not been formally evaluated.
