Phylogeny: The Magnificent Feather Duster, Sabellastarte magnifica (Shaw, 1800), is a member of the Sabellidae Family of Feather Duster Worms. The Sabellastarte Genus is one of forty-one genera in the Sabellidae Family, and there are eight species in the Sabellastarte Genus. The genus name Sabellastarte is a combination of two words, Sabella and Astarte. Sabella is a Latin word for coarse sand or gravel and refers to the sediment often embedded in the protective body tube of these worms. Astarte is the name of a Phoenician goddess, and is used in taxonomy to refer to physical beauty. In combination, the name Sabellastarte means something like “beautiful, goddess-like sand tube worm”. They are also known as the Magnificent Fan Worm. It is known In Mexico as Gusano Magnífico.
Morphology: The Magnificent Feather Duster has a single, large crown of feathery tentacles called radioles. The radioles circumscribe, and hide, the mouth. The crown may be horseshoe shaped or have multi-coiled lobes. The crown has a dramatically mottled appearance, with bold, alternating blocks of dark brown, reddish-brown, purplish-red and pale white or cream stripes. The body is encased in a resilient leathery tube, often coated with sediment. The body consists of an anterior thorax and a posterior abdomen. The body of the Magnificent Feather Duster, without the crown, can reach a maximum of 30.5 cm (12 inches) in length. The crown can reach 15 cm (6 inches) in width.
Habitat and Distribution: Magnificent Feather Dusters are found anchored in sand, mud, shell hash, gravel, or rubble. They live from the intertidal zone to depths of 20 m (66 feet). Different sources vary widely as to the geographic distribution. Some say they are circumtropical, while others insist that they are strictly limited to the Tropical Western Atlantic and the Tropical Eastern Pacific. The limited documentation available indicates that they are present in all Mexican waters of the Gulf of Mexico, and in the more southerly waters of the Pacific. They have not been documented in the central and northern Sea of Cortez and from along the west coast of the Baja Peninsula.
Diet: Magnificent Feather Dusters are suspension feeders, filtering plankton and organic matter from the passing currents, or by creating currents by use of the radioles.
Predators: Magnificent Feather Dusters are preyed upon by crabs, fish (including angelfish, butterflyfish, triggerfish and wrasse) and shrimp.
Reproduction: Magnificent Feather Dusters reproduced either asexually (through fragmentation) or sexually. Magnificent Feather Dusters are gonochoric (male or female for life). Sexual reproduction occurs through broadcast spawning with external fertilization. The fertilized eggs drift as plankton before settling to the bottom as trochophore larvae, which then develop into adult worms.
Ecosystem Interactions: The Magnificent Feather Duster is thought to be beneficial to nearby coral reef habitats by helping keep organic matter from smothering the coral polyps. Their commensal, mutualistic or parasitic relationships have not been formally documented.
Human Interactions: Magnificent Feather Dusters are utilzed by the aquarium trade at a modest level. From a conservation perspective they have not been formally evaluated.
